Nomophobia - fear of being without your mobile phone
I
can't imagine leaving my house without my cell phone. Even if I'm
taking a quick walk over to the corner store to pick something up, I'll
feel concerned that I may miss a call. Making it halfway to the store,
I'll inevitably turn around to get my phone first. This does not make
any logical sense, but it seems that I am not the only one who feels
this way.
A study conducted by YouGov, a UK-based
research organization, talks about the emergence of a new phobia
amongst mobile users in Britain. This one's classified as "nomophobia",
and relates to the fear of losing one's mobile phone -- among other
things mobile-related.
The study says that nearly 53 percent of mobile phone users in
Britain tend to get anxious when they lose their mobile phone, run out
of battery or credit, or have no network coverage. And the number of
anxious men exceeds that of women; they panic whenever they come across
any of these problems. The study says about 58 percent of men and 48
percent of women are experiencing this new phobia; an additional nine
percent feel stressed whenever their mobile phones are turned off.
