Software development is a complex process. Some complexities of software development include - managing rapidly changing requirements and unrealistic estimates of time, cost, and product quality. To overcome these complexities, Scrum comes into process. Scrum is a most perplexing and paradoxical process for managing complex projects. It provides you a set of guidelines to develop software from its design stage to its completion. Scrum is best suited for the projects with rapidly changing or highly emergent requirements.

SCRUM is a relatively new software development methodology that uses an iterative and incremental process for developing software. It is one of the various agile software development methods like Crystal, Extreme Programming (XP), Open Source Software Development (OSSD), Agile Methodology (AM) etc.

As per wiki, Scrum is a process skeleton that includes a set of practices and predefined roles. The main roles in scrum are the ScrumMaster who maintains the processes and works similar to a project manager, the Product Owner who represents the stakeholders, and the Team which includes the developers.

During each sprint, a 15-30 day period (length decided by the team), the team creates an increment of potential shippable (usable) software. The set of features that go into each sprint come from the product backlog, which is a prioritized set of high level requirements of work to be done. What backlog items go into the sprint is determined during the sprint planning meeting. During this meeting the Product Owner informs the team of the items in the product backlog that he wants completed. The team then determines how much of this they can commit to complete during the next sprint.During the sprint, no one is able to change the sprint backlog, which means that the requirements are frozen for sprint.

What is Project Sun SPOT?

Sun has been very successful in spreading Java to over 6 billion devices throughout the world. Well over a billion cell phones run Java. We in Sun Labs are interested in what comes next. In order to help make sure that the next generation of gadgets is based Sun technology, we developed Sun Small Programable Object Technology (SPOT). We've created an experimental platform to inspire developers to build the next great toy, sensor, communication device -- who knows -- using Sun technology. Our Sun SPOT devices make include a flexible hardware platform as well as the software and tools to make it easy to innovate, experiment, and prototype whatever a developer can imagine.

With Reference to wikipedia "Sun SPOT (Sun Small Programmable Object Technology) is a wireless sensor network (WSN) mote (an electronic communication device meant to be the size of a particle of dust) developed by Sun Microsystems. The device is built upon the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. Unlike other available mote systems, the Sun SPOT is built on the Squawk Java Virtual Machine.".

Project Overview
Sun Small Programmable Object Technology (SunTM SPOT).

Programming the world with Java.

The Sun SPOT project explores wireless transducer technologies that enable the emerging network of things. We are building a hardware and software research platform to overcome the challenges that currently inhibit development of tiny sensing devices.

These changes may dramatically affect the nature and type of wireless sensor network applications.

The Sun SPOT hardware platform is a small, battery operated, wireless device running the Squawk Java Virtual Machine (VM) without an underlying OS. This VM acts as both operating system and software application platform. We have created everything from device drivers and development tools to demos and tutorials so users can quickly create their own embedded wireles appliations.

What is a Sun SPOT Device?

The Sun SPOT Device is a small, wireless, battery powered experimental platform. It is programmed almost entirely in Java to allow regular programmers to create projects that used to require specialized embedded system development skills. The hardware platform includes a range of built-in sensors as well as the ability to easily interface to external devices.

Development Tools for SunSPOT

Standard Java IDEs (e.g. NetBeans) can be used to create SunSPOT applications.
The management and deployment of application will be through "SPOTWorld".

SMS Gateway is a software utility that enables you to easily send and receive text "Short Messages" over GSM cellular telephone networks from your local PC or through the network.

SMS GATEWAY is a service through which companies can instantly and cost - effectively send information to any number of GSM mobile phones in the world. SMS GATEWAY works simply by connecting server to the client database. The client supplies the destination GSM number, message content (text or binary), and an optional identification number for tracking purposes.The sms gateway software then converts the data into SMS format and sends the message to any number of mobile phones. An SMS gateway is placed between two SMSCs, acting as a relay between the two SMSCs. It is able to translate one SMSC protocol to another, and can be used by two different wireless carriers to interconnect their SMSCs.

A comprehensive coding standard is essential for a successful product delivery. The standard helps in enforcing best practices and avoiding pitfalls, and makes knowledge dissemination across the team easier. The C# coding standard presented here is very thin on the “why” and very detailed on the “what” and the “how.” The coding standard presented next captures best practices, dos and don'ts, pitfalls, guidelines, and recommendations, as well as naming conventions and styles, project settings and structure, and framework-specific guidelines.

Naming Guidelines

1). Private Variables (Fields in C#) Naming Guidelines

Naming guidelines

Prefix private variables with a "_" and Hungarian-style notation.

Case guidelines

Use camel case as a general rule, or uppercase for very small words

Example:

_strFirstName, _dsetEmployees

// Field
private OleDbConnection _connection;

// Property
public OleDbConnection Connection
{
  get { return _connection; }
  set { _connection = value; }
}

2). Local Variables Naming Guidelines

Naming guidelines

Prefix private or local variables with Hungarian-style notation.

Case guidelines

Use camel case as a general rule, or uppercase for very small words

Example:

strFirstName, dsetEmployees

3). Namespace Naming Guidelines

Naming guidelines

The general rule for naming namespaces is to use the company name followed by the technology name and optionally the feature and design as follows:

CompanyName.TechnologyName[.Feature][.Design]

Prefixing namespace names with a company name or other well-established brand avoids the possibility of two published namespaces having the same name. Use a stable, recognized technology name at the second level of a hierarchical name.

Example:

Akadia.Traffic, System.Web.UI, System.Windows.Forms

Case guidelines

Use Pascal case as a general rule, or uppercase for very small words.

Example:

System.Windows.Forms, System.Web.UI

4). Class Naming Guidelines

Naming guidelines

Use a noun or noun phrase to name a class.
Do not use a type prefix, such as C for class, on a class name.
Do not use the underscore character (_).

Case guidelines

Use Pascal case. Example:

FileStream, Button

5). Interface Naming Guidelines

Naming guidelines

Prefix interface names with the letter "I", to indicate that the type is an interface.
Do not use the underscore character (_).

Case guidelines

Use Pascal case. Example:

IServiceProvider, IFormatable

6). Parameter Naming Guidelines

Naming guidelines

Use descriptive parameter names. Parameter names should be descriptive enough that the name of the parameter and its type can be used to determine its meaning in most scenarios. To distinguish parameters from other variables the prefix "p" should be used.

Do not prefix parameter names with Hungarian type notation.

Do not use a prefix for parameter names of an event handler and exceptions.

Case guidelines

Use camel case. Example:

pTypeName, pNumberOfItems

7). Method Naming Guidelines

Naming guidelines

Use verbs or verb phrases to name methods.

Case guidelines

Use Pascal case. Example:

RemoveAll(), GetCharAt()

8). Property / Enumerations Naming Guidelines

Naming guidelines

Use a noun or noun phrase to name properties.
Do not use Hungarian notation.

Case guidelines

Use Pascal case. Example:

BackColor, NumberOfItems

9). Event Naming Guidelines

Naming guidelines

Use an EventHandler suffix on event handler names.

Specify two parameters named sender and e. The sender parameter represents the object that raised the event. The sender parameter is always of type object, even if it is possible to use a more specific type. The state associated with the event is encapsulated in an instance of an event class named "e". Use an appropriate and specific event class for the e parameter type.

Name an event argument class with the EventArgs suffix.

Case guidelines

Use Pascal case. Example:

public delegate void MouseEventHandler(object sender, MouseEventArgs e);

9). Exception Naming Guidelines

Naming guidelines

Event handlers in Visual Studio .NET tend to use an "e" parameter for the event parameter to the call. To ensure we avoid a conflict, we will use "ex" as a standard variable name for an Exception object.

Example

catch (Exception ex)
{
  // Handle Exception
}

10). Constant Naming Guidelines

The names of variables declared class constants should be all uppercase with words separated by underscores. It is recommended to use a grouping naming schema.

Example (for group AP_WIN):

AP_WIN_MIN_WIDTH, AP_WIN_MAX_WIDTH, AP_WIN_MIN_HIGHT, AP_WIN_MAX_HIGHT
